A Universidade de Aveiro (UA) é o primeiro instituto universitário europeu a assinar um protocolo de cooperação científica com o Parque Nacional da Gorongosa (PNG), em Moçambique e a Fundação Carr (organização não lucrativa dos E.UA.). Esse protocolo foi também subscrito pelas Universidades de Pretória, da Cidade do Cabo, pelo Centro para a Ciência da Floresta Tropical e pelo Instituto Durel.

I was born in Rhodesia and in the sixties my parents took us on a wonderful holiday to see the Gorongosa National Park.

The beautiful memories of those exciting trips into the bush to see the African wild animals would leave an indelible mark on a very young child.

I can still see the magnificent wildlife, open plains, prides of lion under the palms, huge elephant and buffalo. My father running out of cine film and reloading to capture the moment. Large rondavel buildings and trees all whitewashed. These were amazing days that would soon be destroyed and come to an end and be totally annihilated.

As the Founder and Director of Plains of Africa Safaris I recently visited the Indaba travel show and for the first time the Mozambique stand had some interesting products. I asked the receptions lady if there was any information on Gorongosa and that I would like more information to help bring this park alive. I was informed where to go on the stand to find the representative and it was the Gorongosa Tours Manager Mike McNamara, I have known him from school and had worked with his him doing my safari charters to Mana Pools National Park for my groups. Some things in life are meant to be.

I have watched the old films of Gorongosa my father had taken of the Park many times and when I saw your DVD it brought tears to my eyes of the wonderful place I had visited so long ago with my parents.

As a professional guide from Zimbabwe it is my intention to bring safari customers to see this extraordinary place. My company is committed to assisting in promoting this very special place. I plan to feature this on our website: www.plainsofafrica.com

May god protect the beautiful diversity of this almost long forgotten place. It was never far from my mind all the years gone by this is hope for tomorrow and thank you to the Carr Foundation for believing.

The extraordinary wildlife that was wiped out may god protect and safe guard it for future generations so that may too see the wild game of Africa on its open plains.

I am portuguese but I went to a private school in South Africa in the 1950's so I used to follow celebrities' stories all the time and purchased american magazines of that time. One of the most famous called 'Photoplay'.
 
I lived in Lourenco Marques and in 1958 I read in the local portuguese newspaper 'Noticias' that Joan Crawford, a very famous american movie star, was going to Gorongosa for a Safari and would be staying at the Polana Hotel.

So I was there the day she arrived because Polana Hotel was a like a home to me (it was in that swimimg pool that I learned how to swim). All the employees knew who I was and I had no problem getting to Joan Crawford and her husband Alfred Steele who at the time was Pepsi-Cola's Chairman. She signed an autrograph and was surprised to see a 16 year old girl speaking fluent english when this was a portuguese colony. I told her I had been in a boarding school in South Africa and she must have realized I was a priviledged kid. We met at the bar and she offered me a Coke. I was so happy...
 
All this story for what? Just to stress the fact that Gorongosa in the 50's was extremely popular and people from all over the world went there for safaris. Another famous movie star who went there was Gregory Peck.
 
I hope from the bottom of my heart that the entrepreneurs who are now leading this great Park will make it popular for the world once again.

May 23, 2007 – Chitengo

President Guebuza visited Gorongosa National Park on Tuesday and stayed overnight in one of the new luxury chalets. He is the first guest to ever stay in the newly constructed overnight accommodation.

The President went on a 3-hour safari game drive in the Park, passing fever tree and palm tree forests, and crossing through savannah and salt pans. He was driven and guided by Baldeu Chande as they saw herds of waterbuck, impala and nyala, as well as fish eagle and marabou stork. Governor Vaquina was also part of the adventure.

President Guebuza was kind to take time to have lunch with the management team of the Park where he was briefed on progress in restoring the Park. The team explained the animal reintroduction program, the sustainable agriculture program, and reforestation of Mount Gorongosa.

O Presidente Guebuza visitou o Parque Nacional da Gorongosa na passada terça feira e passou a noite num dos novos e luxuosos chalets. Foi o primeiro hóspede a ficar nas novas instalações.

O Presidente fez um safari de três horas no Parque passando por florestas de acácias e palmeiras, atravessando a savana e lagoas secas. Foi conduzido e protegido por Baldeu Chande que lhe mostrou pivas, impalas e inhalas, bem como águias pesqueiras e marabus. O Governador Vaquina também fez parte desta aventura.

O Presidente Guebuza  foi muito simpático por dispensar o seu tempo de descanso, para almoçar com a equipa de gestão do Parque onde recebeu um relatório sobre a restauração do mesmo.
A equipa explicou o programa de reintrodução de animais, o programa de agricultura sustentável e reflorestação da Montanha da Gorongosa.

My four-year old son Ian has become the "frog-saver" of Chitengo. Every day, he collects all the frogs and toads that get stuck in the swimming pool. He shrieks with joy every time he is able to grab one of the slippery critters, and his love of frogs is known far and wide across Chitengo.

O meu filho Ian, de quatro anos, tornou-se no “salvador de rãs” de Chitengo. Todos os dias resgata as rãs e sapos que ficam presos na nossa piscina. Ele brada de alegria cada vez que consegue agarrar um destes escorregadios animais e o seu amor por rãs e sapos é conhecido por todo Chitengo.
