This was observed yesterday. Now we can inform the police about the case and
why tourists get lost. I put the sign back to its original position.

This is a new male. I followed his movements for one hour. He was marking
the territory.

Possible new fish species found on Mount Gorongosa

"A couple of weeks ago I saw fish while hiking up the Nhandar River above Nhancuco, caught and photographed one and emailed it to Alan Gardiner for help with ID. He just got back to me - see response below."

"The fish looked interesting to me, and although I thought it was a Barbus I could not quite get it to a species. I therefore sent your picture on to a colleague of mine at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, (formerly the JLB Smith Institute of Ichthyology).

His response was:

"It looks like one of the orange fin barbs (in the Barbus eutaenia complex). The group occurs from the Phongolo north into central and west Africa. It is very likely that the fish is an undescribed species. They can get up to 15cm although that would be a large specimen. If there is any chance of getting this and any other specimens from Gorongosa that would be really valuable. I realise this isn't always very easy but it is a very poorly collected area."
So the fish is good and interesting news."
